Mythology Test- The Trojan War
The Trojan War
1. Eris, the evil goddess of Discord, is left out of the wedding banquet for King Peleus and Thetis. She throws into the banquet hall a golden apple marked “For the Fairest.”
2. Aphrodite, Hera, and Pallas Athena, all consider themselves the fairest and so they decide to go to Paris who judges them by their bribes.
3. Paris chooses Aphrodite, who bribes him with the fairest woman in all the land, Helen.
4. Because of a bond formed between the suitors of Helen, when Paris steals away Helen from her husband Menelaus, all of the men in Greece vow to destroy Troy.
5. The men gather on ships in Greece, but a hare had been slain by the Greeks, which made Artemis angry. Iphigenia, the eldest daughter of the Commander in Chief, Agamemnon must be sacrificed to appease the god.
6. The war is even for nine years, until Chryseis is stolen and given to Agamemnon as his wife. This angers the god Apollo who sends pestilence to the Greeks.
7. The war has now reached Olympus and the gods are choosing sides.
8. The hardest battle now begins, but stops suddenly when both sides draw back and Paris and Menelaus face each other alone.
9. Menelaus looks to be the victor, but Hera wanted Troy destroyed, so she sends Athena who has the Trojan, Pandarus, shoot an arrow at Menelaus which starts the battle again.
10. Zeus, remembering his promise to Thetis, helps the Trojans who push the Greeks back to their ships, but Hera seduces Zeus which gives the Greeks the advantage.
11. The battle now comes down to Hector (Trojan) and Achilles (Greek). Athena stands by Achilles’ side while Apollo has left Hector’s side, so Hector runs away from Achilles. Due to the deceptive Athena, who dresses up like Hector’s brother, Achilles is able to catch up to Hector and kill him.
